STERECYCLE OPERATIONS MANAGER SIMON LUND WILL BE ATTENDING THE TINSLEY FORUM MEETING
ON TUESDAY THE 17TH OF JULY, 6PM AT TINSLEY COMMUNITY CENTRE, INGFIELD AVENUE
FEEDBACK FROM STERECYCLE TO THE TINSLEY FORUM TRUSTEES
Simon Lund, Operations Manager and Chris Davis, Assistant Operations Manager at Sterecycle introduced themselves to the meeting.
A high number of complaints have been received about odours in the area since February, with a record high of 28 in May. While Sterecycle admit to being the main culprit, they are also aware that fingers are pointed at them when smells are coming from other local plants. The tonnage has been increased from 100,000 to 130,000 tonnes, and it is anticipated that this will increase to 175,000 in the near future. Of this, 130,000 will be council based, and 45,000 commercial and industrial based wastes.
Simon proceeded to inform the Trustees of a number of measures that Sterecycle are implementing to tackle odour issues and keep them a minimum. These include:
" Trialling a foam based neutralizer at source for fugitive emissions
" Trialling a neutralizer/deodoriser system, comprising of compressed air based neutralizer sprays
" Increasing the pressure in the stack from 35,000 to 100,000 cubic metre extraction
" Installing an industrial air curtain system
" Putting a scrubber system in place as a second system (6 month trial basis)
" Re-charging the carbon-filter
" Looking to run the second carbon filter (one in place but not allowed to switch it on at the moment)
" Investigating the efficiency of the bio-filter
There is also less storage space for waste than there has been previously, so there is less likelihood of a malodorous smell from storage waste.
The order has been placed for the sprayers around the door
The order has been placed for the compressed air system
The installer for the air curtain attended site yesterday
Sterecycle anticipate that noticeable improvements will made by July.
The suggestion that lorries carrying the raw waste travel an alternative route to the site was put forward at a Tinsley Forum meeting. This suggestion was passed onto SCC.
Simon agreed that he would attend at the Tinsley Forum Open meeting on 17th July to update the community on the measures they are taking.
