Tinsley Canal Towpath Improvements
The improvements to the canal towpath from Wharf Road to Tinsley Tram Stop has been made possible through Tinsley Forums successful bid to the Community Spaces funds.
The above work included improved lighting under viaduct, seating, interpretation boards, painting Wharf Road bridge, painting railings along towpath, removal of vegetation to improve sight lines and views, planting a wild flower meadow, removal of tree branches obstructing effective lighting of path, with resurfacing of the towpath undertaken by Sheffield City Council.
The project came about because of residents concerns about overhanging trees and vegetation and poor lighting making people feel unsafe to use the towpath to get to the tram stop or Meadowhall. If you have not been on the towpath recently then please give it a try. You could use it to start a walk or cycle ride exploring other parts of the canal towpath towards the City Centre or Rotherham and the Five Weirs walk on the bank of the River Don to the city centre.
On Friday the 30th of September 2011 Cllr Bryan Lodge & Clive Betts MP officially opening the towpath at an event held on Tinsley Canal which was attended by people who had been part of the project and members of the local community. Refreshments were served on board the LB Hardfeet with people able to travel down the canal into Sheffield onboard the LB Hardfeet as part of the celebration.
